about

Debut album from Pacific Northwest forest dweller Nibelung. Minimalist and Burzumic dark ambient music spawned from true depression, suicidality, and isolationism. Avant-garde improvisations lurk alongside lengthy dungeon synth epics. Best consumed alone, in darkness…

"Sometimes, this is the sort of thing you want. The flavor text uses the word “Burzumic” which should give you some indication of what we’re dealing with. Minimal melodic lines, although not as much strict repetition as in Burzum’s prison albums - some of this material could be the darker, more muted cousin of some of the bedroom projects we’ve seen recently. There tends to be two instrumental layers per track, and most tracks have a naturalistic sample running in the background - what I am fairly sure is a fire crackling, sometimes rushing waves or cavernous water dripping. Like those other bedroom projects, this is the kind of music you want to listen to from start to finish - jumping around on this album is not a good way to appreciate what it does well. A lot of the simple melodic fragments are in C-minor, and in many cases they unfold pretty organically over the course of of 4-8 minutes - meaning that at first glance, many of the tracks seem very similar. There are some nuances - rhythmic, syncopation, texture - which distinguish them, but this is a very focused album.

The one outlier here is “The Old Goblin”. The text indicates “avant-garde improvisations”, and I’m fairly sure this is the one track which feels the most like it could be improvised. I remain convinced that it is possible to include improvisation and avant-garde influences into DS, but this track isn’t the evidence I’m looking for to support this claim - there’s a fundamental clash between the bass line and the melody, and the brightness and harshness of this leading synth line isn’t served well by the meandering quality of the tune. I don’t think the track is irredeemable, but it doesn’t feel very confident, especially compared to the assured, comfortable minimalism of the remainder of the album.

But some of the lengthier tracks here also seem to show some elements of improvisation. Everything is grounded by a simple melodic idea and doesn’t change much, but there are some places where the melodies veer off the path and don’t seem too rushed to get back on. This is a great quality for music of this type to have, and the keyboard playing and muted production are strong enough to support a project driven by these more delicate minor-key explorations."
